Jan Ullrich rediscovers love of cycling

With the threat of a lifetime ban hanging over his head, a healthy and upbeat Jan Ullrich said he looks forward to the final resolution of doping allegations linked to 2006’s Operación Puerto, adding that a sanction would have little practical effect on his life as a retired racer or newfound happiness as a recreational cyclist.

In the United States to participate in Miami’s Gran Fondo Colnago, a smiling Ullrich signed autographs and posed for pictures with several hundred fans at Saturday’s pre-ride expo at Miami’s City Hall.

In a wide-ranging interview conducted in English and German (translated by his manager, Falk Nier), Ullrich spoke about his plans, including a newly announced connection to a Dubai-based company marketing low-oxygen chambers designed to mimic the physiological effects of training at altitude.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has doggedly pursued sanctions against the retired rider, who was forbidden to start the 2006 Tour de France after allegations connecting him to the doping network of Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is expected to rule in Ullrich’s case before the end of the month, bringing its formal conclusion some five years after his departure from the sport.

Nier explained that Ullrich is puzzled by the lengthy timeline involved, but most of all “wants to have a final decision, because then it’s over.”

Questioned about the body’s unusual pursuit of a rider long since removed from the sport, the UCI has maintained that retirement does not preclude punishment and that absent formal action there would be nothing to prevent an unsanctioned retiree from returning to the sport. Independent of the verdict, Ullrich put those fears to rest on Saturday.

“There is no chance of (me) getting back to race something,” explained Ullrich, who likewise denies any desire to enter team management at a competitive level. Instead, Ullrich attributes recreational cycling to his victory over burnout syndrome, with which he was diagnosed in 2010.

The rider has signed on as an ambassador for Gran Fondo USA, the organizer of the Miami event, and has plans to participate in a number of upcoming rides for the company. His return to the bike has brought Ullrich such joy that he may soon bring his experience to bear as a mentor to younger riders. Nier reports the two have had early discussions with a number of organizations interested in tapping the former champion’s expertise (in ways unlikely to be influenced by any potential sanctions he may face).

Asked why he felt the UCI had been so persistent in its pursuit, Ullrich speculated that media pressure had forced the body to “be hardline.” And hardline it may yet be. While other riders implicated in the scandal have served and returned from standard two-year bans, a lifetime sanction may not be out of the question, according to Nier. Ullrich previously served a six-month suspension after popping amphetamines at a nightclub in 2002.

Whatever comes his way, Ullrich sees little influence in the ruling. Retired, healthy and happy, he has returned to the spotlight in recent weeks, re-launching his personal website and establishing a Facebook page and YouTube channel to coincide with his Miami appearance and the announcement of his new business venture.

“The rest is over for him right now,” explained Nier, “so, you know, he wants to start a new part of his life.”

IMG owner, chairman and CEO Ted Forstmann, considered one of the most influential and respected men in the global sport industry, has lost his courageous battle with cancer and passed away on Sunday at the age of 71.

Forstmann, who acquired IMG for $750 million in 2004 and had since overseen a major remodelling of the global sport, entertainment and media giant and a period of unprecedented growth in its business, had achieved success in the financial world over several decades before moving into sport. Forstmann Little & Co., the investment firm he founded in 1978, returned more than $15 billion to its investors under Forstmann's leadership.

He was also a passionate philanthropist, donating huge amounts of his money and time to a wide range of causes. In 2010 he signed on to The Giving Pledge, a movement whose members commit to donating the majority of their wealth during their lifetime to philanthropic causes. As well as his work with causes across the USA, his international work included his position as the only non-African trustee of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

His love of sport was longstanding, and in his youth he was a highly regarded tennis prospect as well as playing hockey for Yale University.

Forstmann passed away at his home in New York. He leaves behind two sons, Siya and Everest, brothers Anthony and John, and sisters Marina Forstmann Day and Elissa Forstmann Moran.

Le Coq Sportif has signed a deal with Tour de France organisers ASO that will see the company sponsor the leader's yellow jersey in cycling's most prestigious stage race.

As part of the deal which will become active in 2012, the French sportswear manufacturer will supply sports clothing - including all prize jerseys - to all races organised by ASO, including the Tour de France, Vuelta a Espana, Paris-Nice, Paris-Roubaix and the Criterium du Dauphine.

The brand will replace Nike, who have had a deal with ASO since 1996, having spent 20 years away from the Tour de France after the company first supplied equipment to the Tour in 1951, an association which ended in 1988.

A Le Coq Sportif spokesman described the new deal as "the perfect gift to celebrate the brand's 130th anniversary."

The Casa de Campo is the home to TriStar111 Madrid taking place on 3 July 2011.
The triathlon will feature a race presentation that is easy to follow for spectators.

Madrid will be host city for the first TriStar111 race entirely taking place in a single venue and featuring a multi-lap cycling race. On 3 July 2011, the international triathlon will be held in the Casa de Campo Park close to the city centre offering all facilities for the athletes and race organisation. Spectators will be able to follow the entire race without relocating. A maximum of 500 athletes will be allowed for the race featuring 10 laps of 10km for the cycling portion.

The first TriStar111 Madrid will take place on 3 July in the Casa de Campo – a venue that also hosts the ITU World Series. Casa de Campo is very close to the Spanish capital’s historic city centre and offers great facilities to set up infrastructures. It is also the Green lung of the city and a historical sports venue. In addition to the athletes, spectators will profit from the race layout as they will be able to follow the entire race without having to move from one venue to the other. TriStar111 Madrid will be limited to 500 entrants.

TriStar111 Madrid is possible thanks to the close and efficient collaboration with the Triathlon Federation of Madrid. The race starts with 1km of swimming in the calm waters of the Casa de Campo Lake. The 100km cycling portion will be accomplished in 10 laps of 10km, which is why drafting will be permitted in this race. The closing run will be done in two laps of 5km each, adding up to the total race distance of 111km for the inaugural TriStar Madrid.

TriStar races offer an easy-to-understand format, do not require a signup a year ahead of the race, and last but not least allow for more fun and faster recovery periods than other races thanks to the relatively short swim and run distances. TriStar111 Madrid is open to individual athletes and to relay teams composed of two or three participants. This format has a total length of 111km with a simple approach that the brand has brought to the sport: choose your favourite cycling distance, divide it by 10 for the run and by 100 for the swim: 1km of swimming, 100km of cycling and 10km of running adds up to TriStar111 Madrid.

All TriStar races are additionally focused on environmental protection and adhere to the 4vita.org program of setting up sports events with minimal environmental impact. Social responsibility will be in the limelight as the race collects funds for a local cancer charity in cooperation with Lance Armstrong’s LIVESTRONG™ foundation.

TriStar Madrid is the second race in Spain after TriStar Mallorca on 17 April, featuring the best triathlete in the World, Chris Macca McCormack, two times Ironman World Champion. Honolulu Marathon spending at $106 million, up $6 million from last year

December’s Honolulu Marathon generated $106 million in spending and $5.41 million in state taxes, according to a Hawaii Pacific University study released today by organizers of the marathon.

Spending and tax collections were up from the previous year when the marathon accounted for $100 million in spending and $5.13 million in taxes.

Pat Bigold, director of Honolulu Marathon media relations, said the increase was largely due to the stronger yen and increased spending by Japanese tourists.

Japanese marathoners spent $342.91 per day during the 2010 marathon up 9 percent from 2009, according to the study.

“There were 22,806 entries in the 2010 marathon and 13,492 of them were from Japan. Another 2,221 Japanese participated in the 10-kilometer Race Day Walk which is conducted with the marathon. The Japanese walkers' spending increased by 11 percent over 2009,” the study reported.

Jerry Agrusa, of the HPU Travel Industry Management Dept., has led the annual study since 2001. The study was based on 1,641 interviews with marathoners, including 1,189 conducted in Japanese.

Triathlon grows as ITU's Television Audience figures released

Triathlon is being watched and enjoyed by more people around the world, according to the International Triathlon Union's 2010 television audience statistics released today.

A significant gain in ITU's television reach in 2010 from the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series underscores triathlon's continued growth. This increase was achieved despite airing one less event in 2010 compared to 2009.

In all 556 hours of ITU's events aired in 2010, up from 350 hours in 2009. Television contacts* also rose dramatically with 323-million per event in 2010 compared to 262-million contacts per event in 2009.

"People are drawn to triathlon because it's exciting, looks spectacular on television and is a true lifestyle sport that is within everyone's grasp, regardless of age or gender," said Marisol Casado, ITU President and IOC Member. "Through increased television audiences and unprecedented participation at all levels, we can see that people relate to triathlon, which fuels the sport's continual growth."

Other highlights include:
- Broadcasts in 149 countries
- Live broadcasts in 24 countries
- 728,000 spectators on-site
- 21,000 athletes in mass-participation races

In 2011, ITU's seven World Championship Series events will be broadcast live to a worldwide audience. Next year's Series will include the official test event for the London 2012 Olympic Games on August 6-7 and will conclude with the Grand Final in Beijing-site of the 2008 Olympic Games-on September 10-11.

Triathlon has been on the Olympic Games programme since Sydney 2000. Earlier this month, paratriathlon was added to the Paralympic Games for Rio 2016.

The research and analysis of the television statistics was done by Upsolut, ITU's organisation and marketing partner for the World Championship Series, in conjunction with IFM Sports.

Les intervenants sont des hommes politiques (Al Gore), un chanteur (Bono) et des chefs d'entreprises, comme Bernard Mariette notamment. L'ancien dirigeant de Quiksilver aujourd'hui à la tête du groupe canadien Coalision (marques Lolë, Orage) est intervenu à une conférence TEDx (le x symbolisant des conférences hors Etats-Unis) à Biarritz fin 2010. Il y expose son crédo d'aujourd'hui - "faire de l'argent en faisant du bien", refusant d'opposer l'un à l'autre. Et cela jusque d'ailleurs sa propre entreprise puisque les ateliers Lolë vont bientôt héberger des conférences avec l'objectif de créer du lien, de partager, de trouver l'équilibre (à côté même de séances de yoga par exemple). LAS VEGAS — Nike launched its successful Nike+ fitness software just four years ago, but nearly 4 million users have turned it into the most popular and widely available run-tracking UI ever. And just four months ago, Nike enabled GPS tracking in a completely overhauled iteration of its mobile app. Now, Nike has partnered with TomTom to bring GPS functionality and Nike’s run-tracking prowess to your wrist.

CES 2011The as-yet-unreleased Nike+ SportWatch GPS won’t be of any use to those trying to keep their New Year’s resolutions, but consumers will soon get their chance to try out this slick and easy-to-use run tracker. Operation couldn’t be simpler: Just slap on the watch and punch a couple of buttons to let it know you’ve started running.

The watch syncs up TomTom’s GPS navigation and mapping expertise with the Nike+ sensor (likely found in the sole of your shoe). The dual services integration also ensures that your data will be actually recorded even when running through areas where GPS might be lacking. When you’ve finished your workout, just pop the embedded USB connector on the end of the watch band directly into your computer and your workout is uploaded to your NikePlus.com account through a standalone software app.

Thanks to an integrated accelerometer, the watch face is actually a “tap screen,” so you can tap the display to either bring up the backlight or to designate a new lap while you’re working out. Also, if you haven’t worked out for a few days, the watch screen will bring up a “run reminder” to try and prod you into working out again.

Nike won’t say how much the watch will cost, but you can bet it will competitive with other wrist-centric running gizmos. It goes on sale April 1 in the US, but you can preorder it at Nike.com starting March 1

Top professional cycling outfit Team HTC-Highroad has signed a deal with Skoda Germany that will see Skoda provide the team with a fleet of vehicles for the start of the 2011 season.

HTC-Highroad's men's and women's teams will drive the Skoda Octavia Combi Sport Edition and the Skoda Yeti. The car manufacturer's logo will also appear on the team's jersey.

Skoda's corporate history is bound to the sport of cycling. In 1895, Václav Laurin and Václav Klement founded a bicycle manufactory in the bohemian town Mladá Boleslav. Ten years later the Voiturette A, the first automobile of the young company, rolled out of the workshops. In 1925 Laurin & Klement merged with Skoda.

"On the basis of our traditional roots, our brand feels a strong affiliation with cycling," said Uwe Ungeheuer, head of marketing for Skoda Germany. "We are happy to be the official vehicle sponsor of HTC-Highroad and we are looking forward to a successful relationship."

"Skoda is a very big supporter of cycling around the world, partnering with teams and major races, " added HTC-Highroad team manager Rolf Aldag. "We are very pleased to welcome another innovative brand to our family of partners and we look forward to representing them at our first race of the season, the Santos Tour Down Under. "

The deal is believed to be for a two year period, with an option to extend. It is likely to be worth some €1 million in cash and value in kind over the initial two-year term.

Skoda is a key international cycling sponsor. In April last year, it extended its sponsorship of the Tour de France through to 2013. The company was also a significant backer of last year's UCI Road World Championships.

New dawn for cycling as Team Leopard-Trek is born

The much heralded Luxembourg cycling team, henceforth known as Team Leopard-Trek, was launched on 6th January.

The new team, which boasts key riders Andy Schleck and Fabian Cancellara, unveiled three sponsors: bike manufacturer Trek, which takes a co-title position, Luxembourg's national carrier Luxair, and Luxembourg-based energy company Enovos.

Reports suggest that Trek will be paying anywhere between US$3 million to US$4 million for their place in the team, made up of both cash and value in kind.

Luxair and Enovos, which both have discreet logo positions on the team's new jersey, will be paying significantly less.

According to multiple reports, much of the team's €15 million annual budget over the next four years will be provided by Flavio Becca, a 48-year old Luxembourg businessman who made his fortune in real estate.

Becca is friends with the Schleck brothers and their father. "They proposed the idea to create this structure," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport, "and I did not miss the opportunity."

It remains to be seen whether Becca, who has strong links with fast food giant Quick and supermarket chain Auchan, plans to bring in another title sponsor to run alongside Trek.

Zoot Sports has agreed a two year sponsorship deal with Dextro Energy Triathlon Hamburg.
The Hawaii-based clothing brand will be granted merchandising rights to the International Triathlon Union World Championship series event, along with a presence on stadium advertising and inflatables in TV-visible areas. According to Sponsors.de, the deal is worth a low six-figure sum with a significant value-in-kind component.

Dextro Energy Triathlon Hamburg takes place on 16th and 17th July 2011, with other local partners including presenting sponsor Hamburg Wasser, beer brand Erdinger Alkoholfrei and Sportstadt Hamburg.

Record charitable haul from latest NYC Marathon

The 2010 ING New York City Marathon raised more than $30 million for charity, the biggest haul in the marathon's history, race officials announced Wednesday.

Nearly $20 million was for New York City-based programs, said Mary Wittenberg, chief executive of New York Road Runners, which organizes the race. She has been on a campaign to get more local charities involved in the marathon as a way to leverage the event's economic impact throughout the city.

This year's race had about 8,000 people running for more than 190 charities, surpassing last year's event, in which 6,700 runners raised about $24 million for 92 charities. NYRR officials had targeted a fundraising goal of $26.2 million for this year's race, to match the number of miles in a marathon. They did not expect to surpass that, given the recession.

“This year's marathon was off the charts,” said Ms. Wittenberg. “Clearly, we have tapped into a desire of many runners to run for a purpose beyond themselves.”

The New York City Marathon is one of the most coveted tickets in the marathon world, and as more runners apply, it's become harder to get into. More than 120,000 hopefuls applied this year for about 40,000 spaces, according to NYRR. The marathon is capped due to course restrictions.

Charity slots, which this year required a runner to meet a minimum fundraising commitment of $2,500, have become an increasingly popular way to avoid the nail-biting lottery process that NYRR uses to dole out race numbers.

je pars dans 30' pour une belle aventure. En effet, à 9h ce lundi je serai sur mon vélo en route pour rallier Paris à l'Île de Ré où habite mes enfants; soit 500kms à faire en deux jours, donc environ 250kms à rouler aujourd'hui et demain. Je pense rouler 10h chaque jour. Je n'ai jamais fait cela. J'ai un itinéraire et un Garmin Edge 705, une carte de crédit et beaucoup d'envie... pour le reste ce sera à découvrir. J'avoue ne pas faire le malin et ne pas savoir comment mon corps va réagir. Si tout va bien, je vous donnerai des news mercredi... train hard & have fun!

Voilà depuis le début de cette semaine, j'ai quitté mes fonctions opérationnelles à Active en Europe, société que j'ai co-créé avec mon associé Mitch Thrower fin 2000. Ce fût une très belle aventure faite de rencontres incroyables et de moments inoubliables. Pour info, en 2000 nous étions une petite cinquantaine d'employés chez Active et maintenant c'est quasiment 3000 personnes dans le monde qui travaille pour Active. J'occupe désormais le poste de Président chez Star Productions, une jeune et très ambitieuse start up monégasque spécialisé dans la production, organisation et promotion d'événements sportifs. ça y est, depuis le lever du jour, Franck Ribéry domine la ville de Boulogne sur Mer. Sur une bâche monumentale de 27X33m montée pendant la nuit, le portrait du footballeur a été installé sur le port, sur l’ancienne base sous marine allemande de la 2e guerre mondiale. Initié par Nike, conseillée par l’agence Ubi Bene, l’affichage a finalement été autorisé par le conseil régional du Nord Pas de Calais qui après avoir donné son aval s’était brusquement ravisé au moment de l’affaire Zahia pour « préserver la sensibilité des boulonnais ». Un geste maladroit mais générateur de buzz médiatique dont personne ne se plaindra, à commencer par Nike et Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Petit retour rapide sur les résultats des Ironman du week end dernier avec une triple grande première sur l'IM St George. En effet, la victoire revient à Miki Weiss, qui devient le premier autrichien vainqueur d'un IM. Pour la petite histoire, Miki est un ancien pro vététiste et baigne dans le triathlon "que" depuis deux saisons. Le garçon est adorable et possède sans doute un des plus gros vélos eu égart à son passé de pro vévétiste. Je connais bien "l'animal" puisque son entraineur n'est autre que le belge Mario Huys que j'ai bien connu quand j'étais jeune triathlète à Poissy en 1986...

Ribéry privé d’image ?

Après la demande de suspension du projet de portrait géant de Franck Ribéry dans sa ville natale de Boulogne-sur-Mer formulée par la Région Nord Pas-de-Calais se pose la question de la suite. Nike, sponsor du joueur et commanditaire du projet, se refuse pour l’heure à tout nouveau commentaire et reste donc jusqu’à nouvel ordre solidaire du footballeur qu’elle continue à soutenir. Frédéric Cuvillier, maire de Boulogne-sur-Mer, à quand à lui jugé "ridicule et choquante" la réaction de la région (source Nord Eclair), renouvelant tacitement la confiance et l’admiration qu’elle voue à Franck Ribéry. L’agence Ubi Bene, en charge du projet, n’a pas souhaité faire de commentaire. Le jeu reste ouvert.

From TriMag, sympa le retour dans les parcs de Marc Toesca avec qui j'ai couru entre 1985 & 1988... ci-dessus Marc (à gauche) en compagnie de Georg Hochegger (fondateur et CEO de Star Events qui produit la série des triathlons TriStar).

Sa voix reste à jamais gravée dans les mémoires des fans du Top 50. Les triathlètes, eux, se souviennent de l'historique "Direct" commenté par Marc Toesca, sur Canal +, à l'occasion des premiers Championnats du monde de triathlon, à Avignon, en 1989. Le virus du triple effort n'a pas quitté le journaliste-présentateur. Il sera l'une des "guest-star" du Tristar Monaco le 5 septembre prochain. L'occasion de faire un poit avec cet observateur averti sur l'évolution du triathlon et son implication personnelle...

 Marc, vous êtes l’un des tous premiers inscrits au TriStar 111 Monaco ? La raison ? 

C’est toujours la même histoire…Une soirée avec des copains, des promesses, un pari, et puis au bout du compte, je me retrouve le seul inscrit pour ce TriStar ! Mais j’assume ; j’y suis, j’y reste ! Et le fait d’être m’inscrit très tôt est une motivation supplémentaire pour me remettre à l’entraînement.

Rappelez-nous les relations que vous entretenez avec le triathlon...

 J’ai toujours été sportif. Ca, ce n’est pas nouveau et je pense que le sport est la clé de mon équilibre ! D’ailleurs à mes débuts pour la radio et la télévision, certains me prenaient pour un fou. Je me levais très tôt pour m’entraîner, j’arrivais à vélo ou en courant, bref j’étais plutôt anticonformiste et ma vie ne ressemblait du tout à celle des gens du show business. Entre 1983 à 1986, j’ai beaucoup couru en triathlon, notamment à Nice, ville dont je suis originaire, sur le fameux parcours de l’époque qui comptait 4km de natation, 120km de vélo et 30km à pieds. J’ai été sociétaire du Racing club de France et je figurais parmi les 20 meilleurs français en triathlon. Je côtoyais à l’époque les Cordier, Capogna, Retrain, Methion ; C’était le temps ou Mark Allen dominait la discipline...

 Dans laquelle des trois disciplines êtes-vous le plus à l’aise ? 

Je crois que c’est la course à pied. J’ai couru plus de 20 marathons dans ma vie avec plusieurs participations à Paris et à New York ; J’ai établi mon meilleur chrono à Joinville en 1985 avec un temps référence de 2h37’…J’ai fait aussi 2h44’ à new York…. Côté natation je me débrouille aussi, même si je ne nage plus trop aujourd’hui. A l’époque je passais sous la minute au 100 mètres. Reste le vélo qui est un sport que j’ai toujours plus ou moins pratiqué et que j’affectionne également, même si je suis conscient qu’il faudra que je me prépare consciencieusement pour effectuer sans trop de dégât le parcours du TriStar Monaco.

  Que pensez-vous des nouvelles distances proposées à travers la série TriStar et notamment le 111 ? 

Je crois que c’est attractif pour des gens comme moi qui veulent remettre le pied à l’étrier et se faire plaisir. Le fait de nager moins et d’avoir une course à pied relativement courte devrait permettre à un plus grand nombre de sportifs de découvrir le Triathlon version longue distance. Malgré tout, je sais que la course va durer pour moi environ 5 heures et que ce ne sera pas non plus une promenade de santé. Ceci dit, je le prends avec beaucoup de philosophie car je ne suis pas à la recherche d’une performance ; j’essayerai surtout de rester ‘propre’ et de me faire plaisir un minimum. J’ai envie depuis longtemps de retrouver l’ambiance des parcs à vélo et de redevenir très modestement, le temps de quelques heures, le compétiteur que je fus.

The rise of the middle-aged ironman
The male midlife crisis no longer involves fast cars and younger girls. Now it's triathlons and ultra-marathons

Finding himself lagging behind overweight women and toddlers at the village race was a life-changing moment for Robbie Laughton, 44, director of a brand consultancy. “We’d been out getting drunk the night before in the local pub, and had ended up drawing lots to do all sorts of daft stuff: someone had to go for a colonic, and I had to enter the annual village race the next day. During the race, feeling breathless and hungover, I remember thinking, ‘God, I used to be a winger at rugby. Where’s it all gone?’”
Blokes, as father-of-two Laughton confirms, “go through a weird midlife crisis thing in their late thirties and early forties”, but these days, rather than zoom off into the sunset in sports cars with women half their age, he and thousands like him are throwing their lardy bits and the contents of their wallets at all manner of endurance sports. Triathlon is the fastest-growing mass-participation sport in the UK, and endurance sports across the board are bulging at the midriff with middle-aged men with moobs to lose and something to prove.
A good old-fashioned marathon no longer cuts it. Now, it’s all about Olympic-distance triathlons and 17-hour Ironman challenges, or ultrarunning through the night across deserts, along the side of minefields and in jungles.
Celebrities clocking up the miles include the long-distance cyclist and Channel swimmer David Walliams, 38, the back-to-back marathon runner Eddie Izzard, 48, the ultrarunner and chef Tom Aikens, 40, and Vernon Kay, 36, who is presumably keeping well away from women half his age while he is training for this year’s London Triathlon.
Now lean and mean (and no colonics to thank for it), Laughton trains for a minimum of two Ironmans a year, and last year he competed in the 40-44 age group at the Triathlon World Championships in Australia. Like other men on the scene, he has become hooked on much more than purely maintaining his form. There’s the globetrotting to far-flung competitions that eats up all of his holiday entitlement (“It takes a certain kind of dude to say to his family, ‘I’m off cycling for a week and you’re not coming,’” he admits). Then there’s the kit: a mix of sexy £5,000 carbon bikes, hydrodynamic wetsuits and an ever-expanding armoury of performance-enhancing gadgets. Did anybody say James Bond?
First and foremost, though, Laughton is addicted to the buzz. “If you’re 40 years old, you don’t want to be the granddad in the nightclub, so you find another kick,” he says. “There are some crazy races. I did a Coast 2 Coast in Cornwall, where you start by running up the cliffside. Then it’s 140 miles over two days: running, biking, kayaking, then running again for 20 miles. For me, it’s the equivalent of being off my head in the Ministry of Sound in 1991.”
Rory Coleman, 48, is an ultrarunning personal trainer. Most of his clients are high-achieving men in their thirties and forties. Coleman has run 600 marathons and 150 ultra-marathons, and is currently training Aikens for the Marathon des Sables (MDS), a six-day, 151-mile race across the Sahara in 40-degree heat.
“The MDS is chock-a-block with 30- to 45-year-olds, trying to work out what the heck is going on in life,” he says. “So many have spent the past 20 years just working and having kids. When you head off to the desert, everything gets put on hold. Nothing matters: you get to live in the now.”
The post-traumatic stress disorder that often follows the rigours and drama of such an adventure can have big repercussions, however. “Some guys leave their jobs, others leave home,” Coleman says. “The first time I did it, I came back and was in shock for a month. I couldn’t work out why I might need to press a button to cross the road; it’s hard to return to such cosseted lives.”
The danger of the MDS is something that the 35-year-old financial sales executive Richard Cullen is ready to tackle head-on when he goes to Morocco next month. The training might be giving him a superboost in energy and career focus, and friends might say that it has taken years off him, but it’s the rumours of previous contestants coming home in wheelchairs to have skin grafts on their feet that are really getting him going. “I love the fact that we have antivenom pumps because of the snakes and scorpions, and flares in case we get lost. Everyone around me is banging out babies and moving to the suburbs. This is my last break for freedom.”
He may be right. Cullen says his girlfriend is not happy.
Apparently, she is fed up spending evenings and weekends on her own, while her man is out either running or bending it at Bikram yoga in preparation for the desert heat. To make matters worse, he says, even though he’s spending a fraction of what he used to in the pub, she has just found out that the entrance fee for the race is a whopping £3,100.
It is all swings and roundabouts, though, argues Chris Pilling, 43, a triathlete and CEO of a data and software company. “I might have spent a few grand on a bike, for instance, but my wife rides horses. My bike doesn’t need feeding or have vets’ bills. As for the time away, I look at people who play golf all Saturday and Sunday and wonder how on earth they get away with it.”
For Pilling, one of the biggest pulls of triathlon and one of the reasons commonly cited for the fast growth of the sport is that, as with most endurance sports, age is on your side for once: an older guy is more likely to have built up the strength and mental muscle required to run 50 miles than a flighty 18-year-old. It makes sense, he says, that these sports attract a disproportionate number of middle-aged high-flyers who are in it to win it. There’s even a series of Ironman and triathlon competitions just for CEOs, complete with pre-event helicopter tours of the course and five-star hotels. “As you get older, outside of business, there aren’t so many places to compete, and these sports definitely give older men a place to do that,” Pilling laughs. “It’s totally midlife crisis. You’re too young for golf, and you want to prove that you’re not quite dead yet.”

Last year, I competed in two triathlons, a half-marathon, a marathon, a 172km Cyclosportive and a competitive 10km run. It was my fourth season as an amateur endurance athlete. Training continuously for four years has left me with fantastic memories, a sheaf of aluminium medals, healthy blood pressure, a low BMI and calf muscles I can barely get into my drainpipe jeans. But what I didn’t anticipate was a deep ambivalence about the new cult of ultrafitness.
Modern life is, in many ways, emasculating, and the relentless focus on challenge, achievement and outcome characterised in the endurance disciplines offer a way for men to feel strong and confident, and to aim for something in life.
Certainly, it worked for me — until I began to wonder if all that effort is really worth the reward. Finishing a race is often an anticlimax, and the usual response is to steel yourself for a new challenge. But gradually, I started to feel like a hamster stuck on a wheel, and my friends genuinely began to worry about the amount of time I was spending in Lycra.
Of course it’s good to keep active, and the ultrafit lifestyle keeps one out of the pub. But endurance sports can be solitary, with competitors usually racing against themselves. In my bleakest moments, it felt as if triathlon was a brilliant way of taking the enjoyment out of three really great activities. So while I still run, swim and cycle, these days I’m in it for fun. L'année passée mon pote Georg et moi avions invité quelques amis et relations à venir participer à l'Etape du Tour. Un de nos potes PDG de Transitions Optical aux Usa est tombé sous le charme du Tour de France. Conçue avec l’agence BETC Euro RSCG, elle s’appuie sur l’univers du cyclisme, dans lequel la marque est investie à travers une équipe professionnelle "Garmin – Transitions", engagée sur le Tour de France et 75 autres courses professionnelles. Le dispositif comprend un film (prod. Moonwalk/Radical) diffusé en pan-européen via mettant en scène le coureur Tyler Farrar, ambassadeur de la marque. Umbro revisite le maillot de l'Equipe de France de foot

World Champion se veut un hommage à l'histoire de la Coupe du Monde depuis 1966. Un hommage qui se décline en 14 maillots de football (2 versions: polos 79 euros et t-shirts 40 euros) imaginés par des designers internationaux comme André pour la France, Fernando Chamarelli pour le Brésil ou encore Marok pour l’Allemagne et ZZK Records pour l’Argentine.
Explication de texte: en 1966, l'équipe d'Angleterre gagne la Coupe du Monde. Umbro équipe alors les vainqueurs et 14 autres nations. Sur ces 15 nations équipées, sept ont gagné une ou plusieurs fois la Coupe du Monde de Football: l'Angleterre, la France, le Brésil, l'Argentine, l'Allemagne, l'Uruguay, et l'Italie.

44 ans plus tard Umbro donne carte blanche à 7 designers des 7 pays vainqueurs pour décliner les deux maillots de 1966 portés par les Anglais.

Paris en ligne : la Française des Jeux vise 25% du marché à l'horizon 2012

"Notre ambition est tout simplement de nous imposer comme leader du marché des paris en ligne" déclarait hier lors d'un point presse Christophe Blanchard-Dignac, le P-DG de la Française des Jeux, tout en annonçant une série de partenariats sensés l'aider à atteindre le plus rapidement possible cet objectif. La société a ainsi signé un contrat de deux ans avec la Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) concernant la Ligue 1, la Ligue 2 et la Coupe de la Ligue, qui prendra effet à partir de la finale de celle-ci le 27 mars prochain. La FDjeux a par ailleurs reconduit pour trois ans son partenariat avec RTL et annoncé un engagement de trois ans également aux côtés d'Orange et de Yahoo!. A travers son réseau de 25 000 points de vente et sur internet, le groupe entend réaliser en 2010 plus de 1 Md€ de paris, soit une progression de 40% par rapport à 2009. "Avec cette dynamique, l'objectif est de réaliser cette année 10% des ventes de l'entreprise et d'atteindre 25% de part de marché à fin 2012, soit 300 M€ sur un business qui pourrait représenter à date entre 1 et 1,5 Md€" a poursuivi M. Blanchard-Dignac. Pour promouvoir son offre de paris en ligne fédérée sous la marque FDJ (Parions Sport et Parions Web) lorsque l'ouverture du marché sera effective, le groupe prévoit de consacrer un budget publicitaire équivalent à "4 à 5% de son chiffre d'affaires" a indiqué son P-DG, tout en précisant qu'il pariait sur une rentabilité de ces investissements d'ici à trois ans. Pour nourrir le lien avec les parieurs, l'entreprise a enfin créé la Team FDJ, constituée de 12 personnalités du sport : Bixente Lizarazu, Christophe Dugarry, Basile Boli et Bernard Diomède pour le foot; Christophe Dominici pour le rugby; Richard Dacoury pour le basket; Fabrice Santoro pour le tennis; Jackson Richardson pour le handball; auxquels s'ajoutent les journalistes Christophe Pacaud et Lionel Rosso (qui co-animent sur RTL l'émission "On joue le match"), Philippe Doucet (Canal +) et Karl Olive (ancien arbitre international).

Élu sportif de l'année dans son pays d'origine l'Australie lorsqu’il est devenu champion du monde distance olympique, il a également été élu triathlète international de l'année en 1997, 1998, 2001, 2006 et 2007. USA Triathlon Magazine a sacré Macca « Triathlète de la décennie » en 2010, faisant ainsi suite au grand Mark Allen, détenteur de la décennie précédente.

L’engagement à long terme (5 ans +) de Macca pour TriStar a trois niveaux. McCormack participera à la plupart des TriStar cette année et dans l'avenir. McCormack devient membre de la commission technique et conseil consultatif. McCormack développera et soutiendra la mise en place de la série TriStar en Australie.

Le 6 JUIN 2010, l'Australien prendra le départ du TriStar111 Germany à Worms. « J'adore courir en Allemagne. Les Allemands ont toujours été très gentils avec moi tout au long de ma carrière et j'ai gagné beaucoup de mes plus grands titres en Allemagne. Participer à la course de Lothar à Worms sera fun. Lothar est un athlète avec lequel j’ai beaucoup couru pendant des années et soutenir sa course me fait grand plaisir. » Macca participera également à TriStar111 Estonia le 7 août 2010, TriStar111 Monaco le 5 septembre 2010, et un TriStar supplémentaire qui sera annoncé prochainement. « Je pense que le soutien de quelques sportifs de renom venant de sports d’endurance comme le cyclisme et le triathlon donne de la vitesse aux courses en les rendant plus attractives et offre aux amateurs un point de référence motivant. »

Chris McCormack, membre de la Commission Technique et du Comité consultatif TriStar :
En collaboration avec d’autres grands sportifs comme Lothar Leder, Peter Reid, Vladimir Salnikov, et l'équipe de Star Production, Chris McCormack développera les aspects stratégiques et techniques de la série TriStar. En tant que membre de la commission technique et consultatif de Star Production, ils définiront ensemble les normes de courses et les stratégies globales à l’international.

L'un des premiers événements TriStar qui sera mis en place hors Europe aura lieu en Australasie. Chris McCormack va diriger le développement de la marque et travailler sur la mise en place de courses dans son pays natal l'Australie et en Asie. Ainsi alors que les dates de courses Australiennes restent encore à être déterminées, il est déjà certain que Macca va créer des courses TriStar sur le cinquième continent.
"Le boom de participation aux courses d'endurance est dû principalement au fait que les gens sont à la recherche d'un défi physique qui va les tester, dans un environnement fun." ajoute McCormack. Grâce au partenariat avec TriStar, il est sûr que Macca contribuera à des courses encore plus agréables.
